Shadeism – A Documentary

Some time ago I had written a post on my disgust with “Fair and Lovely” ads in India.  You can read that here.

Recently a fellow blogger had posted a link for this excellent documentary and I thought I would share it with you today.

Watch and discuss.  The link for the site is provided below as is the video (it might take a moment for the video to appear on the screen….so be patient.  It’s worth the wait).

  1. This is the right blog for anyone who wants to find out about this topic. You realize so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I actually would want…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a topic thats been written about for years. Great stuff, just great!

  2. Thanks a ton for stating your opinions. Being a writer, I am always in need of unique and different solutions to think about a topic. I actually uncover fantastic creativity in doing this. Many thanks

  3. Good post. I study something more difficult on totally different blogs everyday. It would always be stimulating to learn content material from other writers and observe slightly something from their store. I want to make use of some with the content material on my blog whether you don’t mind. Natually I provide you with a hyperlink in your net blog. Thanks for sharing.

  4. What is all the irritation about?

How is this different from the caucasians sitting under the sun to get a tan? Mother, father, kids the whole family are seen in half cloths coloring themselves under the sun. How are indians different from caucasians in this regard? Aside from the method, they’re both doing a similar thing.

It reminds of a vintage song I have on my computer whose lyrics goes like this:

English people sleeping in the sun to get a tan
Pouring oil upon their face just like a frying pan
Funny thing about it is they all go rosy red
Next day when the peeling starts they’ll be crying in their bed

Oh, to be in England, now that spring in here
Oh, to be in England, drinking English beer

    • I agree Anuj. Shadeism is found in society structures with regards to your ‘whiteness’ for any culture. Even if you are a white person, if you don’t fit the description of what is ideal then you face issues to some extent. And the outcomes can be just as devastating. Skin Cancer, unhealthy eating habits, extreme dieting, bulimia and even death.
